DAY 22 · Psalm 5:4-6
“For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. You hate all evildoers.” — Psalm 5:4-6, ESV
The holiness of God is not a theological footnote tucked somewhere in the back. It is the most defining truth about the universe we live in. Before David comes to God in prayer, in Psalm 5:4 to 6, he anchors his approach in who God actually is, not in who we have imagined Him to be, because the whole shape of a prayer depends on which one you are actually talking to.
We have built a version of God that delights in us no matter what we choose, that winks at evil, that never abhors anything, comfortable and easy to live with because it never asks anything of us. That version is not in this Psalm, and it never was.
Evil cannot dwell with God, not because He is harsh, but because He is pure. Light and darkness were never going to share the same space, and that is not cruelty, it is holiness. The boastful, the liars, the bloodthirsty named in this passage are not categories reserved for other people far away from us. They are mirrors, meant to be held up against our own hearts before we hold them up against anyone else’s.
The God who abhors wickedness is the same God who sent His Son to rescue people who were full of it, us included. The holiness and the mercy are both completely real, and neither one cancels out the other.
That is the promise inside Psalm 5:4 to 6. The God you are about to approach in prayer is holy, and that is not a reason to stay away from Him. It is the reason to approach Him honestly, on His terms rather than the comfortable version you built for yourself.
