PSALM 6 — MY TEARS

DAY 29 · Psalm 6:6-7

“I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears. My eye wastes away because of grief.” — Psalm 6:6-7, ESV

God is never embarrassed by your tears, nor does He ask you to dry your eyes before you come into His presence. In Psalm 6, verses 6 and 7, David is not composing refined poetry for a distant audience. He is describing a physical, overwhelming reality, reporting nights of weeping so severe that his bed is soaked and his remaining strength is entirely spent. He brings the raw evidence of his collapse right to God.

We live in a culture that pathologizes deep grief, rushing people through mourning and insisting that they recover faster than sorrow naturally moves. But David does not rush past his suffering or pretend he is stronger than he actually feels. He describes his pain line by line to God, placing the embarrassing evidence of his breaking right out in the open where it can be seen and acknowledged without pretense.

The weariness of grief is a very specific kind of exhaustion. It is not the ordinary tiredness that comes from a long day of physical labor, but the deep depletion of carrying something too heavy for too long without relief. When David writes that his eye wastes away because of grief, he is showing us that true sorrow writes itself directly on a person’s face.

This Psalm remains in our Bibles because God wanted us to know that we can bring our raw, unresolved, soaking grief straight to Him. He is the One who keeps every single tear in a bottle, never turning away when we are at our lowest point.

That is the promise inside Psalm 6:6 and 7. Grief is not a failure of faith; sometimes it is the most honest prayer you will ever offer to the God who holds you.
