PSALM 1 — ROOTED, NOT RUSHED

DAY 02 · Psalm 1:2–3

“His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season.” — Psalm 1:2–3, ESV

Fruit gets noticed. Roots get ignored until the drought comes. And collapse rarely starts with rebellion. It starts quietly, underground, hidden in the dark, in the decision to stop going deeper.

The most fruitful people are never the most gifted or talented; rather, they are the most rooted. Good skillset and talent are a gift to you, but roots that bring depth & good fruits over your life are in the decision that you take on an ordinary, unpleasant morning, when no one is watching over you, when you feel low, unmotivated, and the only thing that comes easy is to just quit.

And see that the word this Psalm reaches for is not the so-called “studies” or “schedules” or “timetable,” but rather it chooses the word “delights.” This gives a clear distinction, because just reading or a habitus or a timetable-instilled practice feels like a duty, where you open the Bible like paperwork, and get relieved when it is done. But delight is completely different; it is like to return to the same page, the way you go back again and again to the person you love, because you miss them and crave for them while you are away. One is a habit. The other is a relationship, and the Psalm will not let you confuse them.

And the obnoxious irony is that we live inside the most distracted era that humankind ever measured or witnessed. It asks us: just one more scroll, and we stay there drowned, wondering how one scroll took 4 hours, and the next morning is often with the regret and with new resolution that this will never happen again. And throughout the day we manage to work in that mindset, but later at night, we find ourselves in the same loop. And this is where the decision to take a hard choice comes, and that is to sit with the “Word of God.”

Understand that this verse does not raise its voice to match that noise and chaos of this world, but rather it simply pictures a man sitting still, day and night, while everything around him is built to make sure he never sits still at all.

Then the picture changes from a man to a tree. A tree planted by streams of water, and it shows very clearly that particular tree does not chase the rain or panic in a dry season, because it never depended on the season, circumstances & situation. It depended on where it put its roots; likewise, your fruits and fruitfulness were decided the day you chose where to go deep, long before the harvest ever showed up.

Fruit will come in its due season, not according to your timeline, even though every platform and algorithm has trained us to call anything slower than instant as a failure, but the word of God in the book of Psalms has never measured speed, only the depths of your roots.

So today, ask this question to yourself. How deep are your roots? And are they planted at the right place? Fruit was never the starting point; it was always going to be the last thing to arrive.

Selah.
