DAY 15 · Psalm 4:1
“Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!” — Psalm 4:1, ESV
The most honest prayer David prays here is not thank you, it is answer me, and God is not offended by it. He skips the careful prayer we are taught to build, the kind that starts with worship and saves the request for later, spending more time in praise because He might be more open if you come the right way. But David goes straight to answer me, because he knows God does not need a performance before He listens. That directness is what a real relationship looks like, one where you do not have to prepare the room before you walk in.
O God of my righteousness. Four words sitting under this prayer like a foundation. This righteousness is not David’s own record built over years of doing right. It comes from God, given rather than earned, and David stands on who God already said he is. That is the difference between a prayer trembling at the door and one that walks straight through.
You have given me relief when I was in distress. Before asking for today, David names what God already did, a record he looks at for courage rather than to negotiate. You have done this before, so this moment is not outside what you can do. Memory held right becomes the ground future trust rises from.
Be gracious to me. Grace is never something you earn. It is the free, open-handed giving of a God who gives simply because giving is what grace does, and David appeals to that nature, not his own record. You may be holding a prayer you have not said out loud yet, waiting until you feel ready, until the failure feels less fresh. That is the promise here: come before God as you are, and He will still hear you.
