DAY 23 · Psalm 5:7-8
“But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house; I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you.” — Psalm 5:7-8, ESV
The only qualification you need to enter the presence of God is the abundance of His love, not your own goodness, which is a relief if you have ever tried to measure up to Him on your own record. Psalm 5:7 and 8 come right after David describes a holiness that bars the wicked, and now he tells us exactly how he still gets in. He enters through God’s love rather than his own righteousness.
There is a whole generation that has quietly walked away from faith, not because they rejected God, but because somewhere along the way they decided they were disqualified from Him, too far gone or too messy to be let in. This verse was written for exactly that generation.
Through the abundance of your steadfast love, the Hebrew word here is hesed, covenant love, unfailing love, the kind that was never built with an off-switch. That is the door David walks through. And knowing all of this, he still bows down in fear, though the fear here is not terror, it is reverence, the plain awe of standing in front of a being who is somehow the most holy and the most loving thing that exists at the same time.
Lead me in your righteousness, make your way straight before me, David asks next, and that is the prayer of someone who already knows he cannot find the road on his own, someone who has stopped pretending he can, and feels no shame in saying so out loud.
That is the promise inside Psalm 5:7 and 8. You enter the presence of God through His love alone, and you stay there, one step at a time, through His leading.
