DAY 24 · Psalm 5:9-10
“For there is no truth in their mouth; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue.” — Psalm 5:9-10, ESV
The most dangerous people in the world are not the ones who threaten you openly. They are the ones who flatter you toward destruction, because you never see it coming when it arrives wrapped in a compliment. Psalm 5:9 and 10 name the nature of an enemy whose primary weapon was never force, it was deception dressed up as affirmation.
We live in the age of the flatterer, the smooth word, the curated smile, the voice that leads you away while somehow making you feel found along the way, which is exactly what makes it so hard to spot, since it never announces itself as danger.
Their throat is an open grave. Paul quotes this exact line in the book of Romans while describing the sinfulness that runs through every single one of us, because David’s words about his enemies were never only about them, they are a mirror for the rest of us too. Let them fall by their own counsels, David prays next, and that is not a request for punishment from outside. It is a request that the natural weight of choices made in defiance of truth be allowed to land exactly where it was always headed.
The rebellion underneath all of it is not political. It is the oldest rebellion there is, against God, and that kind of rebellion, left alone long enough, always ends up undoing the very person who chose it in the first place, whether or not they ever see the connection.
That is the promise inside Psalm 5:9 and 10. Test every voice you let get close to you, because flattery and truth are never the same thing, even when for a while they can sound almost identical.
